Genomics, and precision health approaches such as big data science and machine learning have emerged as important tools for public health. Those entering the public health and medical workforces must keep pace with these evolving fields to maximize the benefit to public health. Recognizing this need, ORISE is partnering with the Office of Genomics and Precision Public Health at the CDC to offer a two-day enrichment event covering the latest developments in these fields. The course is a series of 15-60 minute lectures, grouped by topic, with learning objectives for each lecture.

A first-time attendee video for the HL7 FHIR Connectathon describes hands-on FHIR development and testing. The first two hours focus on an overview of FHIR, profiling, and implementation guides. Healthcare organizations have many reasons for bulk-data export, such as populating a data warehouse for operational or clinical analytics, leveraging population health and decision support tools from external vendors, and submitting data to registries and regulatory agencies. Today, bulk export is often accomplished with proprietary pipelines, and data transfer operations frequently involve an engineering and field mapping project. Learn about an exciting new effort by SMART and HL7 to bring the FHIR standard to bear on these challenges of bulk-data export.

Topics covered include characterization of the recipients of laboratory data, data and results storage, and the communication of data and results (especially electronically) to various stakeholders

This basic-level eLearning course provides an overview of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) – also known as a Laboratory Information System – and other information systems that play a key role in laboratory informatics. Included in the course are explorations of LIMS functionality, the role of the LIMS in interoperability, various regulations and standards regarding information systems and laboratory data, and the steps in implementing a LIMS.

Guidance for initiating and sustaining this project and outlines steps needed to set up electronic messaging with partners

This course provides information on the role and processes of laboratory informatics through exploration of the “life of a specimen” as a specimen moves through the laboratory. Topics covered include the roles of various personnel in the laboratory informatics enterprise, data relationships, data quality, and standards, and the generation and flow of information as a specimen progresses through the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases.
